The Magic Power Family Hour

🪄

〰️

🪄 〰️

The Magic Power Family Hour is the children’s entertainment extravaganza that you, millennial parent, didn’t know you desperately needed. 5:00 pm on Saturday, that notorious dead zone in the weekend-in-the-life of a parent, transforms into a hilarious, participatory, kid-friendly but parent-savvy spectacle modeled off of your favorite late-nite talk show!

Hosted by Dr. Laurel Butler on piano, alongside her beloved sidekick Boopy the irreverent puppet, the Magic Power Family Hour whisks audiences of all ages through a whiz-bang hour of fun, including the Gentle Parenting X Games, the Potty Training Olympic, plus special guest stars, talent showcases, Boopy’s infamous banter, and lots of improv and surprises. Sesame Street meets SNL / Weirdo Night meets Ms. Rachel / Pee-Wee’s Playhouse meets Recess Therapy / Bob Baker Day meets The Tonight Show / you get the idea.

Most importantly, parents of young children get an hour of music, comedy, and avant-pop entertainment specially crafted to be developmentally appropriate for little kiddos, culturally relevant for parents, and hilarious for both. Come to the Magic Power Family Hour, where 5pm is the new late-nite.

Dr. Laurel Butler has a Master’s in Theatre Education, a Doctorate in Educational Leadership for Social Justice, and an almost-four-year-old, which qualifies her to do literally anything. Her award-winning performance projects - including PostMan, Sharon is Karen, ACT TWO, Cassandra the Band, September the Show, Lady Stardust, Wild Beasts Sleep in my Forest, and The Great Negocio - have played at festivals and stages throughout this ostensible “nation,” though she is proudest of her decade+ with the Royal Frog Ballet’s Surrealist Cabaret which mostly took place in mud puddles and asparagus patches. Her brain work as nerdy nerd professor smarty pants has been presented at numerous conferences and in academic journals like Johns Hopkins University Press’s Theatre Topics, where her thesis on clown pedagogy was published like over a decade before that was a cool thing to say. She is the Artistic Director of the Magic Power Family Hour, the co-founder and co-teacher of the Clown Sandbox workshop series for kids at the Lyric Hyperion Theater, and tragically often has to work real professional grownup jobs too.
