CLOWN BOSS Chad Damiani (STAND UP AND CLOWN, STAMPTOWN, CLOWN ZOO) brings his popular theatrical mask workshop to The Elysian! This is not a workshop focused on creating traditional mask pieces, but how mask principles can make you more physical, present and dynamic on stage. Ideal for clowns, improvisers, stand-ups and performing artists. This is about more than being comfortable in your body. It’s learning how to trust your impulses and generate material from a physical space – as well as creating deeper audience connections through play.

Open to all levels. Neutral mask provided.

About the Instructor:

Summer 2020. During the height of a global pandemic. A group of LA clowns decided to put on free theatrical mask performances at the old zoo in Griffith Park. These outdoor shows – every Wednesday at noon – drew huge crowds and national media interest. The clowns had found a way to connect, despite the blistering heat, constant distractions and not being allowed to have amplified sound.

Instead of being an obstacle, the masks made the show’s success possible. They forced the clowns to trust movement over words. Take up more space. Control focus. Express themselves with every part of their bodies.

Chad Damiani was not only one of the original creators of Clown Zoo, but is currently its leader and main director. He continues to use mask principles in every aspect of his own work – from creating characters/bits for circus/variety shows and stand-up venues to performing silent improvised clown sets all over the country.
