Clown Fundamentals

ENROLL NOW | $300

Study the fundamentals of modern clown with the artists that make the Elysian “clowning’s North American nerve center.” Use your body, hone your presence onstage, connect vividly with your audience, and create performances that are radically playful, vulnerable, strange, mischievous, gloriously dumb and beautiful.

About the Instructor:

Rachel Ho Ruizhen is a Singaporean performance-maker and multimedia artist based in Los Angeles. She is co-creator of The Elysian’s weekly clown jam and performance workshop, Playspace, and an ensemble member of avant-garde comedy troupe, The Nonsemble. She holds a BFA in Experimental Animation from CalArts and has trained in clown and Lecoq based physical theater with Aitor Basauri (Spymonkey), Emanuelle Delpech (Pig Iron School), Philippe Gaulier, Christopher Bayes, Amy Russell, The Idiot Workshop, and more. Rachel has also created and performed in numerous productions in Los Angeles and beyond, and her work has been featured at Slamdance Film Festival, LAX Festival, and others.

Rachel’s practice draws from improvisational forms and movement traditions with the spirit of clowning at its core. As a guide she aims to create supportive and creatively invigorating containers for collective learning as part of an ongoing inquiry into how we play together.
